Lalla Dyad - The Mystic Kashmiri Poetess by Shafi Shauq
Lalla Dyad, a woman of extraordinary creative genius, visionary, and profound mystic of the fourteenth century Kashmir, is rightly considered the founder of Kashmiri poetry. However, in view of the perfection of expression and form, her poetry seems to be the culmination of a long poetic tradition that remains hidden to the present-day reader; successive ravages of foreign aggressions and long periods of turmoil left it almost effaced irretrievably and only a few stray fragments of that poetry are found here and there in ancient philosophical treatises in Sanskrit. Another practical reason to call Lalla Dyad the founder of Kashmiri poetry is that her poetry is available in a language that is intelligible, though with the help of a glossary, to the modern reader.
